SPOILERS: Do not watch this if you have not seen episode 6 series 1 of ‘The Returned’
For the first time in the series the titular character of the episode is the most interesting one. Where did Lucy come from? Why did she pick this town? Why was she travelling alone without any money? Was she a revenant before she arrived in town, and why is she so sexually driven? There is such a richness to her. She reminds me of a Miranda July character: obsessed by death, a sexual quirk, and a simple curiosity to allow room for thought.Open Back Dresses
But her characterisation points to something more universal about the show, and how it has elevated to stunning new heights. We have now arrived at a point where the revenants have developed far beyond the stock character, or even an amalgamation of stock characters. They are now commanding full personas.view more

The 10th anniversary of the death of David Kelly might have been an occasion to restore some balance to the debate about the Iraq war, which I have tried to do in the updated edition of my biography of Tony Blair (there is an extract here; download the e-book here or buy the paperback here).
In The Independent on Sunday, however, I have taken part in an unsatisfactory debate with Miles Goslett, who persists in propounding the conspiracy theory that Dr Kelly was murdered.
I say unsatisfactory because I felt Goslett refused to engage with the starting point of his case, which is that his demand for a new inquest presumes that murder was a serious possibility. It is frustrating trying to engage with someone who talks about the supposed absence of fingerprints and other details without explaining why he thinks they matter.view more
Having spent a comfortable night at the dog-friendly Burlington Hotel in Sheringham on Wednesday, we set off towards Norwich. BBC Norfolk was on the car stereo and we were thrilled to hear them trailing ahead to our interview about the Barking Blondes book on the afternoon show.
Shortly after a track from 1976, there followed an item concerning a local funeral director attempting to deal with an increase in requests for dogs and their owners to be buried together. Not all human cemeteries accept dogs and for those who don’t consider that dogs have souls, it’s inappropriate maybe, to allow them to be buried on consecrated ground.
This then led on to the question of what to do if your dog was to outlive you. Would it be immoral to ask for your pet to be euthanized in order for the two of you to end your days together? Even if the animal was young and healthy?
We decided to talk about this on our radio show and we were met with a deluge of incensed callers. Every single one of them accusing the thought as selfish and ethically wrong – to end a life prematurely even an animal’s life.view more
